PM job descriptions are vague. What does a PM actually do hour-by-hour? Knowing the rhythm helps you plan your week + spot when you're drifting into ticket-janitor work. The day-to-day mix differs by company stage, but the shape recurs.
A realistic week.
Use these three in order. Each builds on the one before.
Explain in one paragraph the typical weekly mix for a Senior PM.
Walk me through a Tuesday in the life of a Senior PM at a SaaS startup.
Given a PM stuck at 60% admin work, what's the 30-day reset to get back to strategic mix?
MONDAY:
09:00 — Async standup read + reply (15 min).
09:30 — Weekly project planning (60 min, team).
11:00 — 1:1 with eng lead (30 min).
12:00 — Lunch (or skip + deep work).
13:00 — Customer interview (45 min).
14:00 — Write up interview notes (30 min).
14:30 — PRD writing (90 min focus block).
16:00 — Slack catchup, ad-hoc Qs.
17:00 — End of day.
TUESDAY:
09:00 — Standup.
09:30 — Backlog grooming with eng (45 min).
10:30 — Design review (60 min, designer).
11:30 — Customer interview #2 (45 min).
13:00 — Metrics deep-dive (90 min, solo).
14:30 — Stakeholder update writing (30 min).
15:00 — 1:1 with manager (45 min).
16:00 — Deep work block.
WEDNESDAY: heavier on collab + reviews.
THURSDAY: heavier on strategy / forward planning.
FRIDAY: 30-min weekly review + 60-min unblocking + light week-wrap.
WEEKLY MIX (Senior PM ballpark):
Customer-facing: 15-20%.
Eng + design collab: 25-30%.
Writing (PRDs, updates, narratives): 20-25%.
Stakeholder mgmt: 10-15%.
Strategy + planning: 10-15%.
Admin (Jira, calendar, email): 5-10%.
IF YOUR MIX IS:
- 60% admin → you're a ticket janitor. Fix.
- 0% customer-facing → you're flying blind. Fix.
- 0% writing → no durable artifacts. Fix.
JUNIOR PM mix shifts:
More tactical execution, less strategy.
More design/eng pairing, less stakeholder.
STAFF+ shifts:
Less week-to-week execution.
More cross-team + strategic writing.
PM JOB:
Audit your week. Compare to the target mix.
