Why this matters

Treating a newsletter writer like a staff reporter or pitching a blogger with a formal press release signals that you have not done your homework — each format has different incentives, timelines, and expectations that require a different approach. A pitch that would land at a newsletter might insult a beat reporter, and vice versa.

Try it yourself

1. Identify three publications in your category — one traditional outlet, one independent blog, and one newsletter — and compare their average story length, publication frequency, and use of official sources versus personal opinion.
2. For each of the three, draft one sentence describing what the author gets out of covering your story (audience relevance, affiliate revenue, scoop, affiliate link) — this is your opening move.
3. Find a newsletter in your space that covers product launches and read their last five issues to determine whether they accept pitches, native ads, or both — and what format they prefer.
