Vary Sentence Length to Create Rhythm

Why this matters

Monotonous sentence length — everything the same length, one after another — lulls readers into skimming mode where they stop processing meaning. Varying sentence length creates rhythm: short sentences punch, long sentences build context, and the contrast between them keeps attention alive.

Try it yourself

1. Paste a paragraph of your copy into a sentence-length analyzer and identify whether the standard deviation of sentence length is less than 5 words — that signals a rhythm problem.
2. Rewrite one paragraph by following a long sentence with one under 6 words and notice how the short sentence changes the emphasis of what comes before it.
3. Read the rewritten paragraph aloud and mark every place your voice naturally pauses or speeds up — those are the rhythm moments you created.
