Why this matters

Digital analytics rests on three foundational concepts — events, sessions, and users — and confusing them leads to dashboards that measure the wrong thing entirely. Getting this vocabulary right is the prerequisite to every analysis you will ever run.

Try it yourself

Open GA4 Realtime and trigger a pageview on your site; locate the event row and note which fields map to event name, session ID, and user pseudo-ID.
Filter the Realtime report to a single user and count how many sessions and events they generated in the last 30 minutes.
In GA4 Explore, build a free-form report with 'Sessions' and 'Events' as metrics and 'User pseudo-ID' as a dimension, then verify that events-per-session averages above 1.
