The basic cable clip is the foundation. Get one design right; scale to your specific cables. Parametric design lets you regenerate for different cable sizes without redesigning.
Cable clip design.
Use these three in order. Each builds on the one before.
In one paragraph, explain cable clip design.
Walk me through the C-shape attachment to desk edge.
I want a clip that holds 3 different cables. Design approach?
THE BASIC CLIP:
A small piece that:
- Attaches to the desk edge (or wall).
- Holds a cable in place.
- Allows easy removal.
PARAMETERS:
cable_diameter = 5mm # the cable to hold
desk_edge = 22mm # edge thickness
clip_thickness = 3mm # the clip's own thickness
material = "PETG" # flexible enough to flex
CLIP DESIGN:
A C-shape that wraps around the cable.
The opening is slightly smaller than cable diameter.
Cable presses through the opening; clip springs back.
DESIGN STEPS (in Tinkercad / Fusion):
Step 1: Create the desk-edge attachment.
A C-shape that fits over the desk edge.
Outer dimension: desk_edge + 2*thickness.
Inner: desk_edge + 0.5mm (clearance).
Step 2: Add cable holder.
Extension that comes off the back of the attachment.
C-shape with cable_diameter cavity.
Opening at the side; cable enters from above.
Step 3: Add chamfer to edges.
Smooth the edges where the cable enters.
Reduces friction during installation.
Soften visible edges.
EXAMPLE DIMENSIONS:
For a 5mm cable on a 22mm desk:
Outer width: 22 + 6 = 28mm.
Cable holder offset: 15mm from attachment.
Cable cavity: 5mm diameter.
Opening: 4mm (so cable presses in).
For multiple cables:
Multiple holders in a row.
Spacing: 8-10mm between cables (gives breathing room).
PRINT SETTINGS:
Material: PETG (some flex).
Walls: 3-4 (sturdy).
Infill: 20% gyroid.
Print orientation: holder side facing up.
Time: 15-30 min per clip.
ASSEMBLY:
Press the clip onto the desk edge.
Press cable into the holder.
No screws or adhesive.
WHEN IT WORKS:
- Desk edge has consistent dimension.
- Cable diameter is consistent.
- Clip's flex matches cable + edge tolerances.
WHEN IT DOESN'T:
- Cable too thick: holder too small; cable won't fit.
- Cable too thin: holder too loose; cable slides out.
- Desk too thin/thick: attachment doesn't grip.
ITERATION:
Print v1.
Check fit.
Adjust:
- Tighter? Make cable holder slightly smaller (4.7mm vs 5mm).
- Looser? Make it larger (5.3mm).
Repeat until perfect.
VARIATIONS:
ANGLED CLIP:
Holds cable at an angle (e.g., 45° from desk surface).
MULTI-CABLE CLIP:
Holds 2-3 cables in a row.
WALL CLIP:
Mounts to a wall instead of desk edge.
Different geometry: flat against wall vs wrapping around edge.
CABLE BUNDLE CLIP:
Holds multiple cables grouped together.
PRO TIP:
Make the cable holder slightly tapered (1-2°).
The cable wedges in tighter when pulled.
But: still removable by hand.
